Sodium gluconate’s uses: a chelating, cleaning & water treatment agent
Sodium gluconate is increasingly prized for its chelating power, particularly in alkaline and concentrated alkaline solutions. It forms stable chelates with aluminium, calcium, copper, iron and other heavy metals, preventing them from engaging in chemical reactions.
For example, sodium gluconate can help dishwasher detergents to perform at maximum efficiency by preventing interference from hard water ions (like magnesium and calcium). As a chelating agent, sodium gluconate surpasses EDTA and NTA.
Sodium gluconate can also be used as a cleaning and degreasing agent for glass bottles, metal surfaces and in textiles. It also holds application in aluminium etching and metal finishing, as well as a water reducing agent in the construction industry.
Sodium gluconate is non-toxic, non-corrosive and biodegradable. It is popularly used as a corrosion inhibitor; when present at a certain level in water, it can protect steel and copper.
