Sodium Chlorite
Sodium chlorite (sometimes known as chlorous acid) is a chemical compound with the formula NaClO2. We are a leading UK sodium chlorite supplier, manufacturer and distributor.Applications.
Textile Chemicals & Dyes
In the textile industry, Sodium Chlorite's primary application is for bleaching, whitening and stripping textile auxiliaries. Usable on both man-made and natural fibres, Sodium Chlorite destroys natural colour matter without compromising the integrity and tensile strength of the textile fibres making it suitable in the production of permanently white fabrics.
Water Treatment
Used for disinfection of municipal water treatment plants after conversion to chlorine dioxide.
Wastewater applications across civil, industrial and hospital areas
Process water in paper mills
Others
Generation of chlorine dioxide for bleaching and stripping of pulp, and paper.
Used in paper mills to improve run ability of paper machines with less downtime
Sodium Chlorite is used widely in the food industry as an anti-microbial agent with its most common application being the decontamination of meat and poultry carcasses. Sodium Chlorite has been shown to be effective in the decontamination process using both spraying and dipping methods and works by targeting bacterial cell membranes, in particular oxidising amino acid components as well as sulfide and disulfide linkages. Sodium Chlorite is also used in the production of chlorine dioxide which is a proven antimicrobial agent when used in poultry process water as well as an fungicidal in the washing of fruits and vegetables
Overview.
Sodium chlorite is a clear, colourless chemical solution with a weak, chlorine-like odour.
Produced from a reaction of chlorine dioxide in sodium hydroxide, it is composed of sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl) and oxygen (O2) and is commonly used in industrial settings for bleaching, as a disinfectant and as a chemical reagent.

Sodium chlorite’s uses: bleaching, antimicrobial, fungicidal and more
As a chemical compound, sodium chlorite popularly used in the textile and paper industries as a bleaching agent — it is able to remove pigment from a range of materials without damaging the structure of fibres. Its popularity and use as a textiles bleach stemmed from the 1920s.
In cooling systems and for water purification, sodium chlorite is also used for inhibiting microbial growth. Its fungicidal qualities make it very useful in the food industry for washing fruit, vegetables, meat and poultry.
It is also commonly applied as a reagent (a chemical used to cause a further reaction) for the oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids, a process known as Pinnick oxidation. When used with zinc chloride, it has uses in mouthwashes, toothpastes and contacts lens solution.
We have over 45 years’ experience in chemicals. If you’re interested in more detailed product information, simply fill out a request for a sodium chlorite MSDS. To enquire, get in touch through our website or phone 01535 637876.
