Potassium Hydroxide
Also known as lye or caustic potash, potassium hydroxide is a strong alkaline inorganic compound carrying the formula KOH.We are a leading UK supplier and distributor of potassium hydroxide, available as pellets and flakes in a range of pack sizes.
Applications.
Cleaning Chemicals & Detergents
The most common place to find KOH is in disinfectants and cleaning products; the main reason for this is its dissolvability. 121g of KOH will dissolve in 100ml of water at room temperature which makes it the ideal choice for detergents.
Others
Often used in the diagnosis of fungal infections for skin and hair but more commonly used in the creation of liquid and soft soaps.
Potassium hydroxide is also used in manicure treatments as a “cuticle remover”.
In addition, aqueous potassium hydroxide is used as the electrolyte in alkaline batteries.
Overview.
We’re Airedale Chemical: your leading UK supplier and distributor of potassium hydroxide
Potassium hydroxide is a caustic, corrosive inorganic compound. The substance reacts with acids and, as such, holds various industrial and niche applications within the detergent, cleaning and personal care industries.
Potassium hydroxide is commonly a precursor to the production of other potassium compounds. Some primary applications of potassium hydroxide include use as a surface disinfectant, in the manufacture of biodiesel and soft soaps and also as an electrolyte.
At Airedale Chemical, we help clients across the UK, Ireland and the EU to meet all their potassium hydroxide needs. Get in touch today to start your enquiry.
Potassium hydroxide: electrolyte, compound precursor & runway de-icer
Potassium hydroxide is made when an aqueous solution of potassium chloride is electrolysed. An electric current ensures the decomposition of potassium chloride into its separate elements — potassium and chlorine. The chlorine becomes simply a gaseous by-product of the process and the potassium reacts with the water, creating potassium hydroxide.
As a result of its solubility, potassium hydroxide can be found in disinfectants and cleaning products. As well as being commonly used in solutions for cuticle removal and as a precursor for many potassium compounds and soft soaps, potassium hydroxide can be used in the manufacture of biodiesel, alkaline batteries and deicer for runways.
Interestingly, potassium hydroxide is also an E number with some approved uses in the food industry — as a thickener, stabiliser and pH control agent.
