Aluminium chlorohydrate’s uses: deodorants, antiperspirants and water purification
Most of us will have encountered aluminium chlorohydrate in day-to-day cosmetics use — as an active antiperspirant agent, it is a common active ingredient in over-the-counter deodorants. It works to control sweating by forming a gel that obstructs sweat glands, before breaking down.
The variation of aluminium chlorohydrate most commonly used for this purpose is Al2Cl(OH)5. Concentrations of the compound in deodorant and antiperspirant preparations are typically between 10% and 25%.
Aluminium chlorohydrate also functions as a flocculant — it promotes clumping of particles. As such, it is useful in water treatment for removing unwanted dissolved organic matter and any microscopically dispersed insoluble particles.
Because of its high charge, it is preferred in some cases to aluminium sulphate and aluminium chloride for destabilising and removing suspended materials.
